What to Expect in Your First Trauma Therapy Session

Your first trauma therapy session is usually about getting to know you, understanding what brought you in, and helping you feel as safe and comfortable as possible. You don’t have to tell your whole story all at once. In fact, many trauma therapists will not ask you to go into painful details right away. I won’t!

Questions Commonly Asked in the First Session

The first session may include questions about what you’re struggling with now, what symptoms you have noticed, and what you hope therapy can help with. You may talk about anxiety, sleep problems, panic, grief, anger, numbness, relationship stress, flashbacks, feeling on edge, or feeling disconnected from yourself or others.

Therapy Can Support Healing From All Kinds of Trauma

The kind of trauma can shape the first session, but it usually doesn’t change the overall goal. Whether your trauma is connected to childhood experiences, loss, abuse, violence, medical trauma, a car accident, military service, a relationship, or another painful event, the first session is still about building trust, understanding your needs, and deciding what kind of support may be helpful.

What to Share (It’s Up to You)

You can share as much or as little as you feel ready to share. You might talk about what happened in general terms, how it affects your life today, what feels hardest right now, and what you want to feel more able to do in the future.

The Role of a Trauma Therapist

A trauma therapist may also explain how trauma therapy works, what pacing can look like, and how they help you stay grounded during difficult conversations. As your trauma therapist, I’m here to help you feel supported, understood, and more prepared for the healing work ahead.
